How I’m Using Mystery Shopping to Make Extra Money

If you’ve been looking for a side hustle that doesn’t require selling your soul, buying a $5,000 course, or going “live” on social media every night… mystery shopping might be worth a look.

I’ve recently started stacking mystery shopping apps and websites as a way to bring in extra income — and honestly? It’s been kind of fun.

One day I opened a new checking account and got paid $50 just for reporting on the experience.
Another day I visited a gym, got paid $35, and received a free workout.
I ordered dinner through DoorDash for a mystery shop, got reimbursed for my meal, and made $20 on top of it.

Tomorrow? I’m headed to the movies for free and getting paid $25 to evaluate the experience.

Not bad for things I was already going to do anyway.

What Mystery Shopping Really Looks Like

A lot of people think mystery shopping is just walking into a store pretending to be secretive with sunglasses on like some kind of spy movie.

It’s not quite that glamorous.

Most mystery shopping involves:

  • Following specific instructions
  • Paying attention to details
  • Taking photos
  • Timing interactions
  • Writing reports afterward

Some jobs are incredibly easy. Others take more effort and detailed reporting.

That’s why I always tell people:

The key to side hustles is STACKING.

One app alone probably won’t make you rich. But when you combine:

  • mystery shopping,
  • rebate apps,
  • reselling,
  • small task apps,
  • surveys,
  • and cashback offers…

…it starts adding up quickly.

My personal goal right now is simple:

My Goal: $50 a Day

That’s it.

$50 a day, 7 days a week.

That’s:

  • $350/week
  • around $1,500/month
  • just from stacking extra income streams

And honestly, that can cover:

  • groceries
  • utility bills
  • gas
  • debt payoff
  • vacation savings
  • Christmas money
  • or your thrift budget (no judgment here)

The best part is I can work it around my normal schedule.

Not All Mystery Shopping Sites Are the Same

One important thing to know:

There is NOT one giant mystery shopping app with all the jobs.

Each company has its own website and available shops, which means you’ll need to sign up for several platforms and check them regularly.

Some focus on:

  • banks
  • restaurants
  • retail stores
  • apartment tours
  • gyms
  • movie theaters
  • gas stations
  • phone stores
  • car dealerships

Others focus more on tiny “micro tasks” like:

  • taking shelf photos
  • checking prices
  • verifying displays

For example:

Presto Shopper has a variety of traditional mystery shops

A Few Tips If You Want to Start

Start small.

Don’t jump into a complicated $100 apartment shop your first day. Start with easy food or retail shops to learn the reporting process

Be Organized. Keep track of:

  • receipts
  • due dates
  • usernames/passwords
  • reimbursement amounts
  • report deadlines

Read Instructions CAREFULLY.

This is where most people mess up. Mystery shopping companies are paying for details.

Stack Your Trips

If you’re already going into town:

  • grab a mystery shop
  • complete a Field Agent task
  • do a pickup order
  • and hit a thrift store while you’re out

That’s how side hustlers make things worthwhile.

Final Thoughts

Mystery shopping probably won’t replace a full-time income for most people.

But as an extra stream of money?
It’s one of the more enjoyable side hustles I’ve tried lately.

Free meals. Free movies. Extra cash.
And honestly, I’m learning a lot about customer service and business operations along the way too.

If you’ve been curious about trying it, this is your sign to start.

You don’t need to be perfect.
You just need to be observant, dependable, and willing to learn.

And who knows… your next free dinner might end up paying you.

Mystery Shopping Sites Worth Checking Out

Like I mentioned earlier, mystery shopping is all about stacking multiple apps and platforms. One site may only have a few opportunities in your area, while another could have several.

Here are a few more platforms I’ve been exploring:

  • Ellis Mystery Shopper Jobs
Ellis offers a variety of traditional mystery shopping opportunities and periodic higher-paying assignments depending on your area.
  • Reality Based Group
Reality Based Group has restaurant, retail, and customer experience shops. Some assignments reimburse purchases while also paying a shopper fee.
  • Field Agent
Great for quick small tasks like taking shelf photos, checking displays, or answering short surveys while you’re already out running errands.
  • Presto Shopper
One of the platforms I’ve personally used to find shops ranging from restaurants to banks and other customer service experiences.

The biggest thing I’ve learned so far is this:

No single app is going to hand you a full-time income.
But when you stack several together and stay consistent, the extra money starts adding up fast.
